What we didn't know a month ago is that the Optimus Black will land in Canada being fully Skyped up (forgive the pun). Telus will launch the Optimus Black Skype Edition sometime this summer. Yes, you read that right, Skype Edition. What does that mean?
The phone will ship with sort of a Skype placeholder app that, once launched, will download the latest version of Skype for Android onto your Optimus Black. Aside from that, you'll also get 60 minutes of Skype international calling for free, and, get this, Skype credits will be charged directly to your Telus bill. That's some interesting cooperation there between a carrier and Skype, and we'll be very interested to see how it pans out – since carriers usually hate Skype.
Other than that, the Optimus Black that Telus will sell is the exact same Optimus Black that's been launched across the world, with its 4-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with flash, 2 MP front-facing camera, Wi-Fi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS, 1 GHz TI processor, 512 MB of RAM, 2 GB of internal storage, and 1500 mAh battery. The Optimus Black runs Android 2.2 Froyo out of the gate but is upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. We'll have to see if Telus will also launch it with Froyo on board or if you'll get a taste of Gingerbread in Canada.
