CyanogenMod9 nightly builds for Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Nexus S 4G and Motorola Xoom

Friday, February 24, 2012

CyanogenMod9 nightly builds for Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Nexus S 4G and Motorola Xoom
So we heard that the HP TouchPad would be getting nightly builds of CyanogenMod 9, and all owners of the now defunct HP TouchPad need not be so smug as to be on the receiving end of this “privilege” – as it is now revealed that nightly builds of CyanogenMod 9 for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, Nexus S 4G and Motorola Xoom will be made available, giving you your fair share of flashing and testing when you get back home and indulge in your hobby. Obviously, these nightly builds will feature incremental and sometimes unimportant updates, but if you are a sucker for seeing the pieces of a puzzle come together slowly but surely, then it is your cup of tea. Just out of curiosity – as an end user, just how often do you see yourself downloading the nightly updates, will it be on a daily basis, or will you only do so when there is something major released?

HP Pre 3 may get a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor (at least in the UK)

Sunday, July 17, 2011

The HP Pre 3 was announced all the way back in February, yet unlike the HP TouchPad and the HP Veer that were also announced at the same time, HP's flagship smartphone still isn't available anywhere. In the UK, we heard that it would launch on July 8, but that obviously hasn't happened and there were rumors of a delay until the end of this month.

Now we know what the cause of that delay may be. It turns out that an important spec has now changed, at least according to HP's own product listing for the Pre 3 in the UK. Whereas when it was announced it was said to ship with a single-core 1.4 GHz processor, HP now lists the Pre 3 as having a dual-core 1.2 GHz CPU. You can see for yourself over on this page. Here's the relevant screencap:

A processor speed boost is nothing new for HP's webOS lineup of course, since a few days ago it announced the TouchPad 4G for AT&T which will come with a processor that has 300 MHz more than the ‘vanilla' TouchPad sold elsewhere.

This may just be a mistake made by HP's UK staff. After all, we've seen something like that happen at Sprint yesterday. If it is real though, it's unclear whether the processor change will only happen for the UK, for a number of select markets, or if it's going to be a worldwide affair. Though we will let you know as soon as we find out.

HP Pre 3 apparently delayed 'til late July in the UK

Friday, July 8, 2011

Last time we heard about them, the HP TouchPad and HP Pre 3 were supposed to be released in the first half of this month. Unfortunately, it looks like HP won't be able to ship the devices in due time.

According to Clove, which currently takes pre-orders for both the TouchPad and the Pre 3, the new WebOS tablet and smartphone have been delayed until late July. Since Clove is an HP Platinum Partner, it's certainly in position to know when its products will arrive.

The TouchPad's prices start at £399.99 in the UK, while the Pre 3 will cost £360. Both prices include VAT.

Update: Clove changed back the estimated launch date of the TouchPad to July 15, now saying that only the Pre 3 will be delayed.

HP Pre 3 pre-orders start in the UK, £349.99 and shipping on July 8

Friday, June 17, 2011

This February, HP announced its new lineup of webOS-powered hardware for 2011, while also getting rid of the Palm brand. Since then, we've played with the devices, and while we've heard a lot of things about the TouchPad and the Veer, the Pre 3 isn't a device we get to write about every week. Which is a bit strange, since it's HP's flagship smartphone. Perhaps the brand evokes Palm's failures to get any webOS traction.

Anyway, the Pre 3 is now up for pre-order in the UK, with two well known independent online retailers already listing it for similar prices, and with deliveries expected to start at the beginning of July.

First off, Play.com lets you pre-order a Pre 3 for £349.99, and it promises it will start shipping the devices on July 8. Now that price really is very good, especially if you consider what you're getting for the money in terms of hardware and integrated software. Then again, it may still prove too expensive to overcome the main issue that webOS has: the lack of apps. That's what's always been plaguing this OS, but hopefully HP will manage to do something about that over the course of this year. The OS is solid, functional, and dare I say it – beautiful – but in today's app-ridden world, that still isn't enough to reach mainstream smartphone success.

Clove is the other UK retailer which is already taking pre-orders for the Pre 3. It asks £360, and announces delivery in “early July” – so about at the same time as Play.com.

If you're looking forward to getting the latest webOS-powered smartphone, and want to be among the first people in the UK to own it, you should probably pre-order one from the retailer that you like most.
