News Update :

T-Mobile G2 Android 2.3 Gingerbread update OTA rollout starts today

Thursday, July 28, 2011

After missing its initial Q2 deadline, and after we saw a flyer for it back in May (which gave us false hope that its rollout would be imminent), the Android 2.3 Gingerbread for the T-Mobile G2 will finally start rolling out today. Almost eight months after Gingerbread was first unveiled, owners of the T-Mobile G2 will be able to take advantage of Google's newest mobile operating system.

The update will come over-the-air (OTA), meaning that you'll receive a notification on your phone that the update is available. Then you'll be able to choose to download and install it. The rollout of the update is staggered, so it may take a few weeks for it to reach your particular device. Manually checking for updates can be attempted but will not help force the update procedure, at least not until September 1. If by that date you still haven't got the update, then you'll be able to get it manually (or ask T-Mobile to push it to you).

Alternatively, if the update hasn't arrived by then, you could go to a T-Mobile store starting on August 5 and have the update done there. However, if you choose this route, you'll lose all your data (so backup first!) and will have to reinstall all previously installed apps.

Aside from the Gingerbread bits, the update for the G2 brings a bunch of new stuff. Google Books has been added, Wi-Fi calling has been improved, as have been notifications for new SMS and email, and sending an MMS from the Gallery app should work better now.

Slowly, but surely, more and more devices are getting updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. And that's good news for Android smartphone owners everywhere. At least it is until Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich gets released towards the end of the year. After that, the waiting game shall be resumed, if you own an Android device that doesn't have the word Nexus in its name.
