Samsung says the Galaxy R hasn't been confirmed for the UK

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Yesterday we got word that a new Samsung Android-powered smartphone would become available in the UK later this month – the Galaxy R. This in fact is just another name for the Galaxy Z that we've already seen pop up in Sweden, which itself is just a Galaxy S II spinoff, so to speak. Why Samsung would decide to confusingly add different letters to the Galaxy moniker in different markets for the same device is beyond us at this point, but, for all intents and purposes, the Galaxy R and the Galaxy Z are the same thing – a more affordable version of the Galaxy S II, with pared down components here and there.

If you've been anxiously waiting for this handset to hit the streets in the UK, here's some bad news. Samsung got in touch with TechRadar and told the guys over there the following:

“To date, the Samsung Galaxy R has not been confirmed for the UK Market. However Samsung currently has a range of Galaxy handsets available in the UK, including the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Ace, and is committed to providing a range of smartphones at varied price options to suit different consumer needs.”

Notice how the spokesperson avoids to outright say that the Galaxy R is not going to come to the UK. For now, it's just ‘not been confirmed' for that particular market. Which, of course, may mean that it will arrive on those shores at some point in the future.
