Gingerbread launch for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 nears

When it got announced back in March, the future availability of Android 2.3 Gingerbread for Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 caused quite a stir among the brand's fans. Now, we have a video preview of the OS update for you, and a launch date (sort of).

There have been some changes in the features which were originally promised back in March. Among them is the camera UI of the device in the update - it will remain the same as in the older OS versions, and not revert to a stock Android UI. This change was made mostly due to requests from users of the XPERIA X10.

The Facebook inside Xperia functionality from the 2011 lineup of Sony Ericsson droids will be a part of the update. Same goes for the desktop layout and the gesture controls. The music player will get an equalizer too. You will also be able to use the phone as a modem or Wi-Fi hotspot.

As far as apps are concerned, the update will bring support for the most current applications from the Android Market including Adobe Flash player. We have a video of XPERIA X10 with Gingerbread on board in action. Check it out below:

Early August is the expected launch time of the Android update. It is important to note that users of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 with Android versions which have been modified by their mobile operators might not be able to upgrade. Samsung Galaxy S II heading to Bell July 14

We've heard a lot of rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S II coming to the US on each major carrier with its own respective name for each, but we have yet to hear anything official. Meanwhile, the carriers in Canada are on top of their game when it comes to the Galaxy S II. SaskTel confirmed a few days ago that Samsung's super phone would be heading to the carrier next month.

TechFIBE has just uncovered what looks like a Bell flyer that gave us some details on the Galaxy S II including a release date. The phone will run on the carrier's HSPA+ network with speeds up to 21 Mbps.

If you are unfamiliar with the Samsung Galaxy S II, it spots a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor, a 4.27″ Super AMOLED Plus display, a 8 megapixel camera in the rear, and a 2 megapixel camera in the front. The device runs on the latest version of Gingerbread as well as Touchwiz 4.0. The Galaxy S II is probably Android's best phone yet. Hopefully Android fans in the US won't have to wait long to get their hands on the Galaxy S II.

HTC Evo 3D now available to Sprint Premier customers

Sprint's most anxiously awaited smartphone since the Evo 4G is clearly the upcoming Evo 3D. It will become available in just three days, on June 24, but there's a way to get it as early as today.

If you're a Sprint Premier customer, then the HTC Evo 3D is already available for you. You'll pay the same $199.99 that everyone else will, and to get that price you'll also have to sign a new two-year contract. But, and this may be a lot more important to you, you're getting the phone three days before any non-Premier average earthlings. That has to be worth something.

Sprint is also throwing in free shipping for online orders, and it's also waiving the upgrade fee – just for you Premier folk, of course.

If you're interested, and you're a Premier customer, you probably know what to do already. So go. Make some fun of all those non-Premier Sprint customers who don't have an Evo 3D in hand today.

Nokia N9 coming this summer with MeeGo

Stephen Elop said that Nokia would unveil its first MeeGo device this year, and he just made good on his word with the N9. The N9 is a solid slab of 3.9-inch AMOLED screen (854 x 480) sans a keyboard or physical switches of any kind (well, aside from that oh-so-necessary volume rocker and camera button). The phone comes with 16GB or 64GB of onboard memory and 1GB of RAM wrapped in a polycarbonate shell that's colored all the way through, so dings and scratches won't show — unless the wounds run deep, of course. An OMAP3630 1 Ghz processor does the computing while a PowerVR SGX530 GPU is around for graphical grunt work. Connectivity comes courtesy of quad-band GSM and penta-band WCDMA radios, plus Bluetooth 2.1, NFC, and GPS. There is also a dedicated camera button for the 8 megapixel wide-angle shooter, which is capable of aperture F2.2 for low light picture taking and true 16:9 720p video recording. Oh, and it's an AF shooter, not EDoF.

The entire thing measures 116.45- x 61.2- x 7.6-12.1mm and weighs 135 grams, with a battery capable of lasting up to 50 hours (music), 4.5 hours (720p video), or between seven and 11 hours (GSM yappin'). You'll also get gratis turn-by-turn drive and walk navigation with voice guidance in Maps, a dedicated Drive app, proximity sensor and a choice of hue: black, cyan, and magenta. Other hardware specs include 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, an ambient light sensor, compass, orientation sensor, a micro SIM slot, tethering support and a 3.5mm “AV connector.” It'll be humming along on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan, with apps being compliant with Qt 4.7 and HTML5 support bundled in.

As for software? Aside from Angry Birds Magic, Galaxy on Fire 2, Real Golf 2011 and OpenGL ES 2.0, those who take the plunge will be greeted with a Webkit2-based browser, pinch-to-zoom support, unified notifications for Facebook, Twitter and RSS feeds in the Events view as well as social networking profiles and status updates merged into phone contacts. MeeGo touts a user interface simplified to three home views — events, applications and open apps — with a swipe gesture able to take you back to the home view. For those looking to expand upon what's loaded from the factory, Ovi Store access is included, but we've no idea what kind of pricing will be affixed.

Nokia N9 officially announced

Those of you looking forward to get your hands on Nokia's first (and last) MeeGo handset, the Nokia N9 will be glad to know that the Finnish company has finally announced it to the world. After being in development what seemed like eternity, the phone running highly-anticipated operating system is now official. The hardware looks very sleek and elegant, featuring buttons on only one side of the phone - you unlock the phone by double tapping the screen.

The phone packs a 3.9″ AMOLED display, a body made from a polycarbonate material, with internal storage capacities of 16GB and 64GB and will be available in black, cyan and magenta. The phone will feature an 8-megapixel auto focus camera with Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, a super wide 28mm lens, and supports HD video recording and true 16:9 resolution photos. The phone will also have NFC capabilities, Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS.

On the software side, the phone has a UI that is designed to make use of different swipe gestures, a browser built on Webkit 2 technology, the latest Nokia Maps, Drive, Dolby Digital Plus support that turns any regular stereo audio into personal surround sound on any headphones. Steampunk Rotary Mechanical: Cell Phone with Rotary Dial

Steampunk gadgets appear cool at first, but then you realize such items will never be mass produced, or even work in real life; but that does not mean we would not pass up the opportunity to feature a concept as cool as the Rotary Mechanical cell phone.

The design features a modular, Symbian-powered cell phone made of metal and wood with interchangeable plates for different tasks. It even has a rotary dial, which would make dialing more time-consuming yet nostalgic.

We still do not think it would be mass produced, let alone function.

T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide appears in clear photos

We still don't know when the HTC-made T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide will be announced (or released), but in case you want to see what the smartphone really looks like, well, new and clear photos of it have appeared on the web.

As previously reported, the new myTouch 4G Slide is not too different from the myTouch 4G and myTouch 3G Slide. At least not when it comes to looks, because its internals are certainly different, including a dual-core processor, and an 8MP camera with dual LED flash.

Optimus 3D launching July 7, exclusively at Carphone Warehouse

LG's chunky Android phone with the novelty glasses-free 3D display has been given a new launch date, with UK retailer Carphone Warehouse claiming it'll have a van load of the things ready to go on July 7.

The chain also claims to have an exclusive on the Optimus 3D, at least temporarily during the launch window. Currently, the site is showing the phone as being available for pre-order on contracts starting at £35 per month.

The site also has a “week commencing 27th June” delivery timetable on its listing, but that's been superceded by today's new date. It's July 7 as of today. Link via Mobile Today.
